‘You must not have any other god but me!

Then God gave the people all these instructions:

‘I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.

‘You must not have any other god but me.

‘You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. … Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.'”

Exodus 20:1–4, 24

encouragement for today

God’s commandments always are based primarily on who he is. He reveals himself first. Then he asks us to worship and obey him because of who he is and what he has done. Worship is always about a relationship with the God who reveals himself, not about rules. It is important because it becomes the foundation of who we are as well. We can only know our true selves in relation to God. God gave the people their identity by rescuing them from slavery and making them his own. That is our identity, too.
